Backlinks and SEO: Important or Not?

Are you looking for ways to get more viewers to your website? Do you just want people to see your work or read your materials? Did you discover Google Adsense or some other ad service that helps you earn money?

Whatever the reason, you are probably reading this to find ways of increasing your viewership. Of course, you no doubt read or heard about getting backlinks as a way of increasing your popularity with Google and other search engines.

Linking a popular site to your site...sending you viewers!

Backlinks are links from other websites that point towards your website. This is one way search engines decide on the value of your website. In this case, more is better...but don't get silly and try to generate hundreds of backlinks on one of those free backlink generators, i.e., you find out quickly that most of them are outdated with old "http" websites (instead of https) that have little strength or link juice.

Speaking of http and https, if you don't have a https (protocol) in your website URL, you need to add one ASAP.  HTTPS is far more secure than HTTP, and most are aware of this, and certainly search engine ranking algorithms consider this. Some web hosts include a SSL certificate (to get the HTTPS in your URL) and some unfortunately make you pay extra.  There are a few websites that will supply a "free" certificate, but may have limitations. The free part (for a few months...) may be an encouragement to use them as a paying host, and perhaps that might be a good deal.

Back to backlinks, pardon the pun!  What you need to get is quality backlinks from trusted, authoritative websites. The stronger the website is, the more link juice it will pass on to you. The search engine algorithms like reputable websites.

Links that help your website

There are many sources online and in book form that will help you get the backlinks that you need to make your website successful, i.e., let's assume that your materials add to whatever subject/topic you are dealing with on your website. There are many topics to discuss when trying to improve your website, e.g., do follow vs no follow backlinks, target keywords, to name a few (see chart above).

Remember, just a few backlinks are better than no backlinks...keep on trying.
